1996 Ford Explorer: A Pioneer
One of the pioneers in the SUV craze, the Ford Explorer enjoyed instant success when it was introduced in 1991 and with good reason: it was a nice combination of style, room and comfort and could go just about anywhere.
Zoom forward to 1996 and the first major changes were performed on the Explorer. A larger engine was installed, a 5.0-liter V8 with 210 horsepower, making the Explorer the last of the domestic SUVs to have a V8. The added power was great for acceleration from a standstill, but on the highway it lacked that get up and go you want when passing someone.
Other than that, new technology was added, more standard features were added, and more safety features were added, making the 1996 Ford Explorer the best domestic SUV on the market once again, easily outshining the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Chevy Blazer.
Unlike its main competition the Explorer maintained its truck-like qualities. True to the advertising slogan, the Explorer was Ford-tough and it had a distinct truck-like feel to it. Depending on what you wanted in an SUV that could either be a good thing or a bad thing. By managing to straddle the middle ground between comfort and rough character, the Explorer managed to please more of the middle-ground people in America and sales consistently kept it at the top of the market.
And then along came the Japanese with their better technology and their insistence on excellent craftsmanship and, well, the Explorer simply could not compete once the Japanese automakers entered and refined the SUV market.
