There are few absolute truths in life, but one that is a fairly safe bet goes something like this: no matter what car you drive, the driving experience will be enhanced if you are listening to a quality sound system. Those words could easily be the unofficial credo of Bose Corporation, headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts. Founded in 1964 by Amar G. Bose the corporation operates five plants and over one-hundred and fifty retail stores. Car audio equipment offered by Bose includes speakers, amplifiers, headphones, and entire automotive sound systems.

Amar G. Bose in 1964 was a professor in electrical engineering at M.I.T. when he turned his attention to the production of audio equipment for cars. The rest, as they say, is history. In 2007 the Bose media system won the International Telematics Award for the “Best Storage for In-Car Environment.” In other words, Bose knows its stuff!

Taking a quick peek at the list of car manufacturers who offer Bose car electronics is a pretty good indicator of the quality inherent in the Bose components. All GM cars (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Pontiac, and Saab) have the Bose system available as well as European models such as Alfa Romeo, Audi, Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Renault. Japanese automakers Nissan, Infiniti, and Mazda also use the Bose car audio system.

The pioneering breakthrough came when Dr. Bose studied the human perception of sound as well as psychoacoustics in an attempt to produce a sound in music similar to a live musical performance. He was not convinced that quality sound was in any way related to the size of the speaker, a novel idea for his time. His ideas and study led to the creation of the 901 reflecting speaker and from that marvel the Bose lineup was born. Today the Bose sound system can be found at many music concerts, auditoriums, movie theaters as well as the NASA space shuttles.

Obviously the Bose sound components can be found at the Bose retail outlets, but let’s not forget that the truly fortunate bargain hunter might just find a pair of Bose speakers at a U-Pull-It salvage yard. Call around your hometown, check their inventories, and if you are having a lucky day you might stumble upon the Bose component you need for half the price. Install it yourself, turn over that key, crank up the sound, and prepare for a live performance right in your very
