Hyundai Genesis From Cash-n-Carry
Hyundai Motor Company is really an interesting study for any student of marketing and industry. Ten years ago Hyundai cars were considered the bottom of the barrel in the car industry. Cheaply made, lacking dependability and without any identifying character, the Hyundai compacts and midsize sedans were vehicles to steer clear of when it came time to buy.
Fast forward ten years and the Hyundai line of compacts and midsize are the equal of Toyota and Honda. Whatever had been wrong was fixed and then added features included made the Hyundai line a formidable competitor to the Japanese automakers. Now it seems that Hyundai is going after the luxury sedan market with the Hyundai Genesis. Look out Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, here comes the Genesis!
Unlike earlier attempts with compacts, the Hyundai engineers have come out of the starting gates with a darn good car in the Genesis. Priced under $40,000, the Genesis is a rear-wheel drive vehicle that has excellent suspension, luxury to spare and just looks classy.
The entry-level sedan boasts a V6 engine with 290 horsepower but step up in class and you are looking at a V8 4.6-liter engine that spits out 375 horsepower and is downright impressive when teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Considering the fact that the Genesis was introduced in 2009 and that first model was a very nice car, we can only assume that in the three years since Hyundai has only improved upon that excellent intro car. That can only mean good things for the consumers and bad things for the other luxury sedan automakers of the world. The Genesis isn’t ready to take on Mercedes or BMW on mountain roadways yet, but take away the insignia and you would not be able to tell the difference between it and a Lexus or Infiniti and that is saying quite a bit for a car only three years old, especially a car made by a former laughingstock in the automotive world. This is truly an incredible success story, one that promises to only get better in the next few years.
