Headlamps Light Up Your World

So today we are going to talk about the history of the headlamp. Please, no snide comments from the rear of the hall; this is fairly interesting if you have an automotive mind or for that matter just a historical mind. So put your cynicism on hold for a few minutes and read about the illuminating headlamp.

When horse and buggies ruled the streets it was quite common to see their path lighted by a candle fueled by acetylene and/or oil. First introduced in the late 1880s, these lamps were popular because they were resistant to the wind and rain. However, they didn’t give off much light and were only effective from about thirty feet, so obviously something had to be done, especially when motorized vehicles entered the scene and speeds increased.

Electric lights finally became standard on cars and trucks by 1908 and sidelights, tail lights and headlamp were integrated on one system by 1908. However, Cadillac had the big breakthrough in technology with its Delco electrical ignition and lighting system in 1912; this was the ancestor of today’s headlamps and lighting systems.

High beams and low beams became standard by 1927 and the standard 7-inch round sealed headlamp was introduced in 1940. The final technological breakthrough came in 1962 with the halogen headlamp which was used worldwide except in the United States; we finally joined that particular bandwagon in 1978 and since then there have been only minor changes to the headlamp.
