Heater Cores Keep You Toasty

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The heater core is your friend. If you don’t think so go out on a winter morning and start your car and wait for the interior to warm up; if it doesn’t warm up then you will remember those words…the heater core is your friend.

Located under the dashboard of your vehicle, the heater core is made up of conductive tubing and cooling fins. Here is how it all works.

Your engine is cooled by water and antifreeze which is circulated through your engine by the water pump and this enables the radiator to give off heat to the atmosphere. Some of that heat is diverted to the heater so that you can have heat inside of your vehicle. Using a thermostat the amount of warm air is kept at a constant temperature so you are comfortable and not continually cussing Old Man Winter. The thermostat is controlled using levers or knobs and in some of the new cars this function is done electronically. No matter how it is done it is the heater core that is crucial in the process and if the heater core quits functioning then you are in for a cold ride to work.

Are they easy to replace? Moderately so in truth; it requires disassembling the dashboard and extracting the old heater core and replacing the new one. A bit tricky but it only requires a screwdriver and a wrench and the know how is provided online if you have a computer and hey, who doesn’t have a computer? It's not like you are replacing a transmission. The point is that if you have a mechanic do this job you will pay a couple hundred dollars for a ten dollar replacement part and that is a bit outlandish. Why not give it a try; the worst that will happen is you can’t do the job and the best that can happen is you will save money and feel darn proud of yourself, and the pride thing is priceless.

Modern salvage yards like Cash-n-Carry most likely have the replacement part you need no matter what it is. Need a used radiator? We have it! Need a used battery or used side mirror? We have it! These are replacement jobs that practically anyone can do if they have the desire to save money and who doesn’t have that desire? Come on down to our self serve junk yard and see for yourself just how easy it is to save money and feel good about your mechanical abilities. The name is Cash-n-Carr y and we are the Savings Place.
