Nissan Maxima: Family Sedan Revolution

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The Datsun 810 switched its name in 1982 and became the Datsun Maxima, and a couple years later the Datsun name switched to Nissan and thus was born one of the more innovative car brands on the automotive scene, the Nissan Maxima.

Over decades past Japanese family sedans were known primarily for their reliability, durability and craftsmanship. They were not known as being particularly fun to drive. All of that changed with the Nissan Maxima, a family sedan known as much for its excitement as for its reliability.

Sporting a powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine kicking out 290 horsepower, the Maxima had everything missing in a Japanese family sedan and at a much-lower price than its European rivals. Without a doubt it was not built as solidly as a Mercedes-Benz or BMW, nor was it as quiet as a Jaguar, and the handling could not match those European icons, but considering its price was thousands plus thousands less, the Maxima deserved serious consideration for the average family. And consideration it did receive.

Now it has been thirty years since that innovative Japanese family sedan hit the American market and all that has happened in that time is that the Maxima has improved. The competition got tougher over those years and Nissan continues to meet their challenge and remain at the top of the mid-price family sedan ladder. Not a bad track record at all!

Keep an eye out for used Maximas because they are a force to be reckoned with if you can find one with relatively low mileage and minimal body damage. And having said that keep an eye out for Nissan Maxima used auto parts because they just keep going and going, the Energizer Bunny in the auto world.
