Premium Stands For Expensive In BMW Used Parts

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Say this for German engineers: they believe they make the finest automobiles in the world! There are a few Japanese auto makers who would debate that fact, but a related fact is that BMW leads the world in premium car sales, so evidently it isn’t just the Germans who believe this.

Having said that, BMW used car parts are expensive. BMW has been making automobiles since 1916, and there is no doubt that they make a fine automobile. There Is, however, considerable doubt as to why the parts are so expensive, but that debate can wait for another day. For this article we will concentrate on the fact that if you own a BMW and you need a repair you are looking at a sizeable expense.

Before we go any further, here’s a piece of trivia you can use later in your life if you are ever playing Trivial Pursuit. The round blue and white emblem on each BMW represents the propeller on an airplane, which makes sense since BMW made airplane engines early in their history. Now back to the point of this article.

To repeat a point we have made many times, there is no reason to pay top dollar for a replacement part. Never go to a dealership; not only do you pay top price for the part but you then pay anywhere from $75-$100 per hour to have that part put in your BMW. Less money will be spent going to an auto parts store, buying the part yourself, then having a mechanic replace it, but still this is an expensive option. Always, and we do mean always, the cheapest route to take is going to a salvage yard, buying the part, and replacing it yourself. No labor costs, 60% savings on the part, and a feeling of satisfaction are your rewards for taking this option.

But let’s go back to an earlier point. Other than name recognition, there is no logical reason why BMW replacement parts should cost so much. Japanese automakers make every bit as reliable a car as BMW and yet their used car parts are much less expensive. Welcome to Economics 101. Marketing is all about perception, and the perception in play in this instance is the perception that an expensive car means expensive replacement parts. This perception does not have to be true; it simply needs to be believed in order for the price of said parts to be considerably higher. What the public believes the public will pay. End of story!

And that truly is the end of this story. If you are willing to believe that a BMW used part should cost extra then you are well within your rights to pay extra. But if you believe that saving money is your natural right, then find a way to accomplish that. Options are available for the discerning buyer.
