The Pure Joy of Manual Transmissions

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Nothing spells “fun” as much as a finely-tuned, top-performing manual transmission in a motor vehicle. For those of you out there who are getting a little long in the tooth, our first memories are of a four-speed transmission attached to the steering column in our grandfather’s ’45 Chevy pickup. Learning the proper time to shift, remembering the H pattern of the gears, feeling like you were one with the truck, it all added up to a fine driving experience and is one of the great memories attached to youth.

And the truth is that nothing has changed with the advancement of time. Today vehicles will regularly have five, six, and even seven speed manual transmissions but the basics of how they work have remained the same. What has also remained the same is the feeling that a driver gets when driving a car with a precise-shifting gearbox. It has something to do with a hard- to- define feeling of man, vehicle, and road, all synchronized as one, taking on whatever the road has to offer.

The basics of how a manual transmission works are really pretty simple. The driver shifts gears, thus transferring power from the engine to the driveshaft and wheels. In other words, the speed and torque of the engine need to be adjusted to proper speed and torque that is sent to the wheels. Lower gears allow the engine to work up enough speed to start accelerating from a standstill, and after that speed and torque need to be adjusted depending upon subsequent speed of the vehicle.

That’s the simple part of Transmissions 101. The hard part comes with doing repair on them because they are intricate units of machinery and repair or replacement requires some pretty specific knowledge. If you have that knowledge then the best place to save money on replacement parts is at a You Pull It salvage yard. Depending on the make, model, and year of your vehicle, used car parts like transmissions or individual used parts that make up a transmission are easy to find at a junkyard and quite inexpensive.

And what was the point of this article? Was it to give you a brief history of the manual transmission? Was it to explain how they work? Was it to tell you where to find inexpensive used parts? All of the above for sure, but mainly it was to remember the fun associated with driving a manual transmission and to encourage anyone who is just starting out driving to learn how to drive a manual transmission and experience for yourself the pure joy of being one with a fine motor vehicle. May your lives be filled with perfectly-timed downshifts!
